ABOUT
ESI stands for Employee State Insurance and is managed by the Employee State Insurance Corporation . Employee State Insurance Corporation is an autonomous body created by the law under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. This scheme was started for Indian workers. Employee State Insurance is a self-financing social security scheme and health insurance plan for Indian workers, offering medical and disablement benefits. Provisions of the ESI act 1948 makes it obligatory for every employee who exceeds the minimum bar of a maximum salary of 15,000. For employees working on large scale or small scale industries, the ESI registration provides social security, which comes in the form of medical or financial aid in case of an emergency.
All Establishments and Factories employing more than 10 employees are required to mandatorily apply for ESI registration within 15 days of the ESI Act, 1948 becoming applicable to them.

Medical Benefit
A registered employee is entitled to full medical care during the period of their incapacity and their restoration to health and working capacity.
Sickness Benefit
The scheme provides financial aid to compensate for the loss of wages during the period of employee’s absenteeism from work due to sickness, injury due to employment, pregnancy and during hospitalisation in any ESI hospital.
Maternity Benefit
Maternity benefit for pregnancy is provided for a period of 3 months.
Extendable by further one month on medical advice at the rate of complete salary subject to contribution for 70 days in the next year.
Unemployment Allowance
Under the Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana, unemployment allowance is payable to an insured Person who become unemployed after being insured three or more years, due to closure of factory/establishment, retrenchment or permanent invalidity.

1. Who administers the ESI Scheme?
The ESI Scheme is administered by a corporate body called the ‘Employees’ State Insurance
Corporation’ (ESIC), which has members representing Employers, Employees, the Central
Government, State Government, Medical Profession and the Parliament. The Director General is the
Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation and is also an ex-officio member of the Corporation.
2. What is Registration of an Insured Person?
Registration is the process of obtaining and recording information about the entry of an employee
into ‘insurable employment’, for the purpose of his identification under the Act.
3. Why Registration of an Insured Person is necessary?
Registration of employee is the process of identification to provide the benefits under the Act which
are related to the contributions paid by the employer on behalf of each of the insured persons.
4. How does the scheme help the employees?
The scheme provides full medical care to the employee registered under the scheme during the
period of his incapacity for restoration of his health and working capacity. It provides financial
assistance to compensate the loss of his/ her wages during the period of his abstention from work
due to sickness, maternity and employment injury. The scheme provides medical care to his/her

5. . What are the other bodies of the ESI Corporation?
At the National level, the Standing Committee (a representative body of the Corporation) for
administering the affairs of the Corporation, and the Medical Benefit Council, a specialized body that
advises the Corporation on administration of Medical Benefit, are functioning.
At the Regional Level, the Regional Boards and Local Committees have been constituted to review
the functioning of the scheme and make suggestions for its improvement.
